TOPIC: The Dark Valley
Today’s Reading
Psalm 30:1-12
Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. – Psalm 30:2 (NIV)
In February 2023, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Barely six months before, I had undergone a thrombectomy and angioplasty. As despair threatened to overwhelm me, I questioned God, “Why me? You have just brought me through one health crisis. Now this. Why me, Lord?” In response, I sensed God saying to me, “I will strengthen you with my righteous right hand. Do not fear.”
Enduring biopsies, scans, and a mastectomy in April, I felt engulfed by darkness. Yet, Psalm 23 echoed in my heart, reminding me of God’s presence even in the darkest valleys. Following surgery, I faced more medical issues and repeated hospitalizations. I often felt I was teetering on a precipice. Through this difficult time, my children were my unyielding pillars of strength. Their support reminded me of the support Aaron and Hur gave to Moses (see Ex. 17:12). I am deeply thankful for them.
As I lay in bed during those months, scripture was my refuge. Isaiah 40:31 spoke to my soul, reminding me of the renewed strength that can be found in waiting on the Lord. Today, I stand reinvigorated, echoing the psalmist’s sentiment in Psalm 32:7 — “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” God truly heals and restores.
