THE UPPER ROOM DEVOTIONAL 2ND OCTOBER 2024, WEDNESDAY MESSAGE

TOPIC: Pour out Your Heart

Today’s Reading
Romans 8:18-27

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. – Psalm 62:8 (NRSVUE)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
I used to struggle to pray because I worried that if I didn’t pray for something, it wouldn’t be taken care of. Whenever I started to pray about one thing, I would suddenly remember another subject that I felt obliged to pray about instead. But as soon as I started on the new topic, I would think of yet another subject to pray for. This went on and on, and I ended up praying about nothing, which made me feel guilty.

I cried out to God in despair, “Lord, please show me what to do.” The answer came right away: “What do you have on your heart right now? Just pour it out before me.” I realized I did not have to worry about all the things I needed to pray for. I could focus on the one thing I had on my heart now and pour it out before God. I learned that I could take my time with each prayer.

When we let God guide us in our prayers, we can trust that God will take care of our concerns — both named and unnamed. My trust is not in my prayers; my trust is in God.

Today’s Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for being our refuge. Thank you for your faithfulness. Help us to ask for and trust your guidance when we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thought for the Day
God will care for my concerns even if I don’t voice them.

Prayer Focus
People who struggle to pray
