The Lord is close to everyone who calls out to him, to all who call out to him sincerely. – Psalm 145:18 (CEB)
As I get older, it seems I am needing to have more medical procedures. Frequency, however, does not diminish my anxiety about the procedures. What does help is remembering to pray first — and not just silent, under-my-breath prayers. Right before a procedure gets started, I ask the doctor or dentist if they mind if I say a short prayer. I then ask God to bless those in the room, to guide the doctor’s hands, and to bring me good results with speedy healing.
So far, no one has objected. As a matter of fact, occasionally I will see the doctor’s face become calmer as we all take a minute to stop and talk to God — a short respite in their otherwise hectic day. These moments of prayer help me remember not to focus on what is about to happen to me but rather to focus on God walking through it with me.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, please help us remember to come to you with our needs, both large and small. We know that you are there for us whenever we need you. Walk with us, as we pray the prayer Jesus taught us, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:9-13, NIV). Amen.
Thought for the Day
In anxious moments, I will take time to pray.
