Today’s Reading
Psalm 34:1-14
God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth.” – Genesis 1:20 (NIV)
After taking a bird-watching tour in Vermont, I became fascinated by our winged, singing friends of the air. I cannot walk outside without hearing the cooing of a mourning dove, the song of a robin, the chirp of a sparrow, or seeing the unique features of the many birds God created. Slowly but surely, birds and their songs have become a part of my daily life. In the past, I did not hear or pay attention to their beautiful and unique songs; now I can’t wait to hear them and try to identify a specific bird by its song.
Because I listen so attentively to the songs of the birds, I have to wonder, Am I listening as attentively for God and God’s message to me? Everywhere around me are people begging for love, kindness, help, attention, food, shelter. Do I listen to their pleas? Do I watch and listen for God’s word as to how I can respond to them? Just as I have become aware of the birds of the air, I need to increase my awareness of other human beings, listening and responding to them as God has commanded us.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, we ask that you help us hear the cries and songs of our brothers and sisters just as we listen to the birds of the air. Amen.
Thought for the Day
Every day I will listen and respond to God’s creation.
Prayer Focus
To be attentive to others’ needs
