In a rare unoccupied moment on our farm, I decided to repair a nesting box that was looking shabbier and shabbier each time I went in to collect eggs. The hardware on one corner was rusty, so I grabbed a screwdriver to remove it before applying wood glue and new hardware. I managed to loosen and begin the removal of the screws when I thought to myself, That’s enough; I can remove it the rest of the way, twisting it with my fingers. But the minute I put down the screwdriver and attempted to twist the screw with my hand, it would not budge. After a few more futile tries, I used the screwdriver until the job was done.
The tools God provides us — prayer, scripture, fellowship — are similarly indispensable. We often underestimate their power, thinking we have things under control, and attempt to live our lives without our spiritual tools. But when we do, we find life more painful and challenging with more and more failed attempts at overcoming the struggles. However, when we learn to use our God-given tools, we can more easily master life’s challenges.

O Lord, we thank you for the tools you provide to help us overcome our trials and grow spiritually stronger each day. Amen.
