LESSONS FROM A BIRD
Dave M. (Missouri, USA)
TODAY’S READING
Matthew 6:25-34
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. – Matthew 6:26 (NIV)
One morning, I noticed a small sparrow perched on my window ledge. The bird seemed completely at peace despite the gathering storm clouds above. What struck me most was its quiet confidence — no frantic searching for shelter, no obvious signs of worry about the approaching weather.
The sight brought me back to reality about my own situation. That morning I had been anxiously reviewing my monthly budget, fretting over unexpected car repairs and rising grocery prices. Despite my careful planning, I felt weighed down with concern. But the sparrow reminded me of Jesus’ words about the birds of the air. These creatures don’t plan for their future, yet God provides for their needs. The sparrow wasn’t worried; it lived fully in the present, trusting in the provision that had never failed.
This simple observation shifted my perspective. Responsible planning has its place, but my worry wasn’t adding anything constructive to my situation. In fact, it was stealing my peace and causing me to doubt God’s faithfulness, which has always sustained me. I often let anxiety about tomorrow overshadow God’s provisions for today. But trust isn’t about having everything figured out; it’s about believing in God’s constant care, even when storm clouds gather.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Loving Father, help us to trust in your provision as naturally as the birds of the air. Teach us to recognize your faithfulness each day. Amen
