Romans 5:1-5
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. – James 1:2-3 (NIV)
In 2017, after completing my internship, my life took an unfortunate turn: I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Because it would be a lifelong condition, I kept asking God, “Why?” Months after the diagnosis, I carried the same negative attitude. Every day was filled with crying, anger, and feelings of hopelessness. I felt so fatigued that walking became a problem. Because I could not sleep at night, my brain function deteriorated.
Through this trial my faith was tested. But I drew closer to God and changed my “poor-me” attitude. Yes, struggles come with pain and suffering, but hoping and trusting in God gives us the courage to endure our trials confidently.
In today’s scripture, James tells us to consider it joy when facing trials. The joy — the hope — I had was that healing would come for me. Now, one year later, my symptoms have improved and I rarely lose sleep.
As we face challenges, let’s ask God to help us change our attitude and to let hope grow within us.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God, give us hope as we endure the struggles that our life brings. Change our attitude from sorrow to joy, knowing you will see us through. Amen.
Thought for the Day
A positive attitude toward trials allows God’s joy to help me heal.
Prayer Focus
Those with chronic fatigue syndrome
