Psalm 40:1-13
I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay. – Psalm 40:17 (NIV)
I had to travel about two hours from my home to the city of Bayamón, Puerto Rico, for a work meeting, so I took public transport. In the morning I rode a passenger van to Bayamón. Later that day, I went to the public transport counter to arrange my trip home. The agent told me that the only van available would take me as far as Santa Isabel but not to my town. I decided to take it, and we arrived in Santa Isabel late. The last van there had left for the evening, and no other option was available.
As I stood outside the public transport office, I said aloud: “Please, Lord Jesus, send one of your angels to help me.” Ten minutes later a transport van pulled up, and the driver asked where I was going. When I told him, he replied: “Get in; that’s where I’m headed.” As we got underway he told me he wasn’t sure why he came that way, and I told him God nudged him in this direction because I had been praying for God’s help. With a grateful heart, I recalled the words of the psalmist: “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry” (Ps. 40:1).
Today’s Prayer
Loving God, thank you for hearing our cries. When we are most in need, you are always there beside us. Amen.
Thought for the Day
God is my ever-present help in trouble (see Ps. 46:1).
