Today’s Reading
1 Peter 2:9-10
Jesus said, “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” – Matthew 18:20 (NIV)
My younger son, Kris, worships at an independent Christian church in New York City. They originally rented a space on the 40th floor of a building in Manhattan. It had an amazing view of the city from floor-to-ceiling windows. Each week they would set up for Sunday school and take their resources out of a locked closet.
One Sunday they had the kids draw pictures of what a church looked like. The next week they posted the pictures in the foyer. I was amazed that all the kids drew pictures of skyscrapers with a special room on top. I would never have imagined a skyscraper church, but the children did.
This was not at all my idea of church, and so different from the one where I grew up — a modest white clapboard building with seating for about 100 and an adjacent fellowship hall.
But Matthew reminds us that the church is more about the people than the building. “Where two or three gather” Christ will be there, no matter what the building looks like. What will the church look like in the future? I am not sure, but I know God will be with us.
Today’s Prayer
Dear God of all, thank you for your promise to be with us where two or three are gathered. Help us to be open to new ideas of what church might look like. Amen.
