[The Lord] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NRSVUE)
I had worked in ministry a while and had been a counselor, spending countless hours surrounded by others’ grief. But it was a whole new experience when my mother died and grief came home with me. Grief sat on my couch, pulled up a chair at my dinner table, lay in my bed, and followed me to the bathroom. I had to learn about grief by living with it.
Grief has been a demanding teacher. I have never felt such sorrow. There are depths of loss that no human comfort can reach. Grief is isolating in this way.
But here is the strangest thing I have experienced through all of this: I have never felt such hope! In those depths of sorrow, where no one else could go, I communed with Jesus Christ. Christ met me in ways that I had never known before. I discovered that his grace really is sufficient. Like manna in the desert, his grace is enough for today. It is enough for this moment, though I cannot store it up for future moments. I have to trust that the grace of Christ will meet me every day for as long as I wander through any desert. And so far, every time, grace has been with me — and it has been enough.
