TOPIC: Our Daily Bread
Today’s Reading
Matthew 14:13-19
[Jesus] gave thanks and broke the loaves. – Matthew 14:19 (NIV)
It was early morning as I quietly worked in the kitchen, carefully measuring and weighing the yeast, the flour, the sugar, and a pinch of salt. As I mixed the ingredients, the Lord’s Prayer came to mind: “Give us this day our daily bread.” After mixing the dough, I left it in a warm place to rise, then sat for a while and thought of how often I’ve rambled through the Lord’s Prayer without giving much thought to the words.
Later, as I kneaded and formed the dough, I recalled how Jesus broke bread, lifted it heavenward, and gave thanks to God. I couldn’t help but wonder what Jesus was thankful for. Was he thankful for the farmer who planted the tiny grain of wheat? For the sun that warmed the earth, enabling the wheat to grow? Was he thankful for the gentle rain that brought life to that tiny grain of wheat?
Later, as the aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, I thought of how Jesus must have been thankful for the miracle of nature — for the sun and the rain and everything that went into making a simple loaf of bread.
We too can remember those whose hands helped to make the bread we eat, raising our eyes heavenward to give thanks to God.
Today’s Prayer
O God, how often we take for granted the bounty of your goodness! Help us remember that the food on our table is given by you and that without you and your love, we would have nothing. Amen.
Thought for the Day
