THE UPPER ROOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL 11 AUGUST 2024, SUNDAY MESSAGE

TOPIC: The Blessed

Today’s Reading
Matthew 11:1-5

The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. – Matthew 11:5 (NIV)

As a social worker, I assist persons who have physical or psychological issues and need help. There are many illnesses in the world, and I have come to see that many people’s lives are filled with pain. But I also know that the Lord is with those persons who are suffering.

A woman who had previously experienced serious depression but who was on the road to recovery wanted to take part in a dance class. I thought that the level of the dance class was quite advanced and would be difficult for her, but prayerfully I sent her out to participate. She later reported to me in a tearful voice, “I was half dancing and half crying.” It was a transformational experience for her, and from that time on, her heart was opened. She allowed other people to help her and went on to achieve a remarkable recovery.

I have prayed before, wanting to help persons in the midst of difficulties, but in doing so I have become aware that God is already present with persons in distress, helping them to heal. And though I am often the one offering help, I have been surprised at how much I am encouraged and helped in the process.

Today’s Prayer
Lord of abundant mercy, thank you for helping us through life’s difficulties. Help us to help others. Amen.

Thought for the Day
When I offer help to someone, God is already present.
