Trust in the Lord

The Upper Room 7 December 2021 Daily Devotional Message
Our family recently lost my daughter-in-law Evelyn, and she will be deeply missed. Joy, the youngest of her 11 grandchildren, loved to run to her, wrap her arms around her legs, and tell her she’d never let her go. Much like the friends of the paralytic in our reading from Luke, my son Mike worked with hospital staff for weeks to fight the illness that enveloped Evelyn. In the end, her heart and kidneys couldn’t go on.
We are not always ready to let go of our loved ones. However, if we follow God’s word and trust God, the burden is lighter. Because I have been blessed with a very long life, I have had to endure many losses. I remember my mom, too, grieving that she was one of the last of her generation. But every day she would write in her journal, “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
We are meant to cherish our days with gratitude for God’s presence in our lives. Yet we understand that we are mortal and trust that our loved ones will keep us alive in their hearts. Joy may have to be reminded of her grandmother’s big laugh, but we hope she will remember the love she and her grandmother shared.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, we rejoice in the gift of family. Even as we pray for miracles in the face of illness and pain, we hold on to the hope of your promise of eternal life. Amen.
