Keep Sowing
David Brannock (Tennessee, USA)

TODAY’S READING
Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

KEY VERSE: Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. – Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)

The Upper Room 4 March 2022 Daily Devotional MESSAGE

One morning while walking downtown, I silently lamented to God about a painful rejection. A writing professional had not only given a negative critique of a story I had invested years crafting; the expert also advised me to walk away from the project. Tears rimmed my eyes. Was it time to give up writing for publication and find another way to honor God and bless others?

As I continued my walk, a piece of litter in the road caught my eye. Nestled against the curb was a half-full pack of pens. I picked it up and pulled out the two that remained. They were my favorite kind: black ink, bold strokes, comfortable grip. I smiled and thanked God for this gift. What others may have seen as trash, I now clutched as a tangible sign that I should keep writing.

Today’s reading reminds us that we never know which of the seeds we sow in faith will blossom. God alone knows which ones will flourish and which ones will wither. Failure stings, yet we will not reap a harvest if we never risk planting. Scripture invites us to keep sowing because we can trust God with the results.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Faithful God, when we are discouraged at the lack of visible success, remind us that you will prevail and that our job is to continue to sow the seeds. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
By faith I will sow seeds and trust God with the harvest.
