TODAY’S READING
Luke 18:18-19
KEY VERSE: A person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. – Galatians 2:16 (NIV)
MESSAGE: Growing up in a family of overachievers, I always felt one step behind. I was not an all-A student, and I did not want to make decisions about my future based on how much money I would make. I wanted to take my own path in life, but I was surrounded by people who constantly put me down for my lack of societal perfection. I began to feel worthless, as if my life had no meaning. But I soon realized that I must not wallow in these worldly flaws. I was created in God’s perfect image; I could rejoice in my differences. It was vital for me to recognize that through Jesus, I am free from the expectations of society.
Genesis 1:27 states that humans are made in the image of God. Yet, society has created standards for humanity that can lead us to doubt God’s beautiful creation. We do not need to justify ourselves by social expectations; we are justified by our faith in Jesus Christ. In Jesus, we are free to be who God created us to be.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Faithful God, thank you for creating me in your image and for freeing me from the expectations of society. Amen.
