A Sense of Urgency
Travis Teague (North Carolina, USA)
KEY VERSE: Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. – Psalm 105:4 (NIV)
Recently, my wife and I pulled into a restaurant parking lot and noticed that a vehicle backing out had something on the rear bumper. As we got closer, I could see it was a wallet. I jumped out, grabbed the wallet, and went to the driver’s door. The driver had a surprised look on her face, not quite sure what I was doing. But as soon as I held the wallet up, her eyes brightened with relief and thankfulness.
Today’s scripture story shows how Jesus used our feeling of urgency when we’ve lost something to illustrate a point about salvation. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, searches intently for us; but sometimes I wonder how hard we search for Jesus. Do we have that same sense of urgency when it comes to following him and sharing the good news? Sometimes we may find that we’ve left Jesus on the rear bumper of our lives. We focus too much on our wants and needs and distance ourselves from Jesus — not realizing we’ve left our most valuable possession behind.
We can always ask God to rekindle our urgency to seek and to share the love of Jesus. No matter how far we may have traveled, God is always there, ready to forgive and welcome us back.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Today I will search for Jesus as urgently as he seeks me.
For opportunities to share my faith
Dear God, forgive us when we forget to prioritize our faith, and help us to pursue your wisdom as we journey day by day. Amen.
