TOPIC: In the Potter’s Hand
TODAY’S READING
Jeremiah 18:1-6
KEY VERSE: House of Israel, can’t I deal with you like this potter, declares the Lord? Like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine. – Jeremiah 18:6 (CEB)
Ten years ago, I made a decision that had a devastating effect on my family — the loss of my marriage, the loss of my career, and a four-year stint in the criminal justice system, including two years of incarceration. Although my prison time is over, my status as a convicted felon will never end. My family also carries that stigma. They will forever have the scars left by this ordeal.
As I contemplate the last decade and all my family and I have been through, I am drawn to the passage in Jeremiah where God sent the prophet to the potter’s house to receive a divine message. The potter was working on a pot that was imperfect, so he formed it into another pot. The message was clear: God can take our imperfect selves and shape us into something new.
Ten years ago, I could be identified as a father, husband, business owner, CPA, and provider. Today, I am identified as a servant, employee, writer, friend, and comforter. I have realized we must be willing and receptive if God is going to shape us into something new. God’s work takes time, and we must be patient while we persevere in trusting our Creator.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, strengthen us to surrender to your potter’s hand, to be molded into the people you desire us to be. Amen.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Today I will begin to let God mold me into a new creation.
PRAYER FOCUS
Families of those in prison
