TODAY’S READING
1 Samuel 3:2-11
KEY VERSE: The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” – 1 Samuel 3:10-11 (NIV)
The Upper Room 1 February 2022 Devotional MESSAGE
Traveling through a thick fog, I was listening to a devotional program based on the calling of Samuel. The speaker gave an invitation simply to pray Samuel’s prayer, “Speak [Lord], for your servant is listening.” Then we were to be silent and listen.
The road on which I was traveling was crooked, and the thick fog created even more danger. I passed fields and thickets of trees from which deer could easily veer into my path. I cautiously navigated the road ahead and prayed, “Speak [Lord], for your servant is listening.”
God spoke by revealing how that moment was a great analogy for how to live by faith. I thought about how often it feels as if we are living in a fog, enveloped in the cares of our world while doing our best to follow the path before us. Then God reminded me that though the road ahead can be dark and winding, the light of Christ is always with us, leading us to where we need to be.
I realized in that moment that if I trust the guiding light of God’s care, I will ultimately be okay. I did make it safely to my destination, with the words of Samuel still echoing in my mind: “Speak [Lord], for your servant is listening.”
TODAY’S PRAYER
O God, be forever the light before us and the voice that calls us. Help us to listen and respond. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
