Streams of Joy Devotional 10th August 2023 Thursday Daily Devotional Message by Pastor Jerry Eze
TOPIC: Oil of Mercy
FOCUS: “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.” (1 Samuel 16: 13)
MESSAGE: In our Focal Scripture, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David as king of Israel. Notice that the oil that was used in anointing David came from a horn. In Old Testament times, horns were placed in the temple, and even if anyone was guilty, if the person grabbed the horns of the altar, he was shown mercy. So the horn was symbolic of mercy. David was anointed with oil from the horn. David was anointed with the oil of mercy.
Notice that in the course of David’s kingship, he had several failures. He had moral failures. He defiled Bathsheba and even got her husband killed. He failed to go to war at a time when kings went to war. David’s hands were literally soaked in blood, but in all, mercy continued to speak in his favour. David did a lot that should cause God to condemn him, but mercy continued to speak. He simply had the oil of mercy upon him.
Friend, I pray for you: may the oil of mercy speak in your favour. In times when you are in error, and in times when you are not at your best, may mercy speak in your favour. In times when you fail to meet the standards that God expects from you, may mercy speak for you. Let mercy speak for you when you are caught up in error. Let mercy speak louder than judgement in your life. Let mercy speak for you when you are lawfully wrong.
When mercy speaks in your favour, it screams judgement against your oppressors. Again I pray for you: may the mercy of God speak against the troublers of your destiny. May the mercy of God crush the opposition against you. May the mercy of God rescue you from every affliction and torment. May the mercy of God set you free from the snare of the enemy. May the mercy of God cause you to rise from your valley of dry bones.
May the voice of mercy speak louder than the voice of judgement upon your life. No matter what you have done, let the mercy of God speak in your favour.
Psalms 25: 10 says: “All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.”
DECLARATION: Mercy will speak for me; the voice of mercy shall be louder than the voice of judgement, in Jesus’ name!
