SCRIPTURE READING: John 5: 1-14 (KJV)
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
FOCUS VERSE:
“Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” (John 5: 14)
Streams of Joy Daily Devotional 19th August 2025 MESSAGE:
Our Focal Scripture speaks of how Jesus found the man whom He had healed at the pool of Bethesda, in the temple. So, after the man received his healing, his next stop was the temple. After he received his healing, his next agenda was to get closer to the place of worship. After receiving his healing, his next agenda was to grow in the place of his intimacy with God. After receiving his miracle, his topmost priority, was God.
Friend, can it be said that after you received your desires from God, your highest priority remained to be intimate with Jesus? Can it be said that your miracle took you closer to Jesus? Can it be said that your testimony became a positive turning point in your walk with God? Can it be said that you received your miracle and became closer to Jesus than you had ever been? Can it be said that God favoured you and you loved Him more?
As soon as Jesus healed the paralytic man at the pool, he didn’t need to be told to go to the temple. Could it be that this man had always desired to be in the temple, but could not go because of his infirmity? Could it be that his infirmity robbed him of a chance to fulfill his desires to be close to Jesus? Jesus already knows how your infirmity is affecting your commitment and devotion to Him, and He is taking it away so that you can come closer to Him.
The miracle you received is an indication to come closer to Jesus; it is not an indication to go further from Him. Jesus did not show up for you so that you can run far away from Him. He didn’t bless you so that He can lose you. He didn’t make a way so that you can lose your way. He didn’t make His face to shine upon you so that you can turn your back on Him. Jesus showed up to change your story, so that He can be part of your story henceforth.
If ever Jesus shows up at your ‘pool of Bethesda’, make a commitment to get even closer to Him than you have ever been. Let every miracle you receive from the Lord take you into the ‘temple’.
James 4: 8 says: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
DECLARATION: Every divine intervention I receive will take me closer to God, in Jesus’ name!
