My Cover Or God’s

SCRIPTURE: Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. – Genesis 3:7, NKJV

Seeds of the Kingdom 5th April 2023 Devotional MESSAGE

Recently someone told me about how his child had tried to cover shame and guilt his own way. He said, after doing something wrong, his son had gone to his room, put on a bathrobe, wrapped himself in a blanket, and had got into bed. When he went to the room and saw what his son had done, he recognised that he was trying to cover himself with a false covering.

This reminded me of Adam and Eve, and how they tried to do the same thing. They tried to cover themselves in a way they thought would help, rather than looking to their Father to seek the covering they needed. Then in Genesis Chapter 3 we read how God used the shedding of blood and the sacrifice of an animal to provide skins as a covering for them, a picture of what was to come later on through the cross of Jesus.

Thankfully this boy’s father had seen what his son was trying to do. He was able to sit down and discuss the situation, and pray with him. So the young boy was able to come under the rightful covering of his father, and as a result of that, under the covering of God.
Today so many people try to cover themselves with what they think is right for them, rather than going to their heavenly Father to seek His covering over their life. God wants to be the covering over our lives and He made that possible by sending His son Jesus to die on the cross for each and every one of us. It’s only through Him that we can find true security and that place of right covering. It’s up to us to recognise this and run to Him. Psalm 91:1 tells us, ‘He who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty’.

I wonder what is it that you turn to when you’re feeling bad or when you’re struggling with hurt and pain. What do you do to try and cover your needs? All of us need to turn to God in our times of need to seek Him and to allow Him to meet our needs and to recognise that only He can be our true covering.

PRAYER: Father forgive me where I’ve tried to cover my own life with the ways I think are best for me. Help me to recognise where I have done this so I can bring them to You, so You can heal those places in my life. Father, help me to come under Your covering, which will keep me safe and secure, where it will meet all my needs, in Jesus’ name Amen.
