Seeds of Destiny 28 April 2026 Devotional: The Trap of Bitterness
Seeds of Destiny 28 April 2026 Daily Devotional, SOD Message Written By Dr. Paul Enenche

Welcome to the Seeds of Destiny 28 April 2026 Daily Devotional by Dr. Paul Enenche, your spiritual nourishment for the day. This devotional is written to equip you with God’s Word, deepen your faith, and align your steps with divine purpose. Today’s message carries prophetic insight, practical wisdom, and a powerful prayer declaration to guide your journey and unlock your destiny.

TOPIC: The Trap of Bitterness

SCRIPTURE: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. Hebrews 12:15

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Offences are inevitable, but bitterness is optional.

Our anchor scripture reveals that bitterness is not a small issue. It is described as a root. The root is hidden beneath the surface. It may not be seen immediately, but it is alive, growing, and influencing everything above it. When bitterness is allowed to take root in a person’s heart, it does not just remain; it troubles the individual and eventually affects many others.

Bitterness is the feeling or showing of anger, hurt, or resentment because of a bad experience or a sense of unjust treatment. In simple terms, bitterness is what settles in the heart when someone feels deeply wronged and refuses to release both the pain and the offender. In practical terms, bitterness is a combination of unforgiveness and deep displeasure over a wrong deed.

It is important to understand that offences are unavoidable in life. Jesus made this clear in Matthew 18:7 and Luke 17:1. Offences are inevitable, but bitterness is optional.

Now, what are the Roots of Bitterness

1. Unforgiveness from Human Wrongdoing
One major root of bitterness is unforgiveness arising from real wrongdoing. Sometimes the hurt is genuine. Joseph experienced betrayal by his own brothers. He was envied, sold, and treated unjustly. Yet Joseph refused to let bitterness define his destiny. If he had allowed bitterness to rule his heart, he would not have preserved a nation during famine. This teaches us that offences may come, but how we respond to them determines our future.

2. Envy and Jealousy
Bitterness can also arise from envy. Scripture shows that Jesus was delivered to be crucified out of envy Matthew 27:18. Paul faced opposition because of envy. Acts 13:45.
Envy distorts perception. It makes another person’s progress feel like a personal loss. When envy matures, it becomes resentment, and resentment becomes bitterness.

3. Frustration from Delays and Challenges
Another root of bitterness is prolonged frustration. Delayed expectations, repeated disappointments, and sustained trials can weaken emotional stability. Job reached a point where he spoke in the bitterness of his soul Job 7:11.

The Way Out of Bitterness

A. Releasing Bitterness Toward People
Holding bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting another person to suffer. Bitterness hurts the carrier more than the offender. Scripture reminds us in Romans 12:19 that vengeance belongs to God. Human actions cannot ultimately frustrate divine purpose. Joseph later declared in Genesis 50:20 that what was meant for evil, God turned for good.
Releasing someone does not mean denying the pain. It means surrendering judgment to God and freeing your heart.

B. Releasing Bitterness Toward Yourself
Some people are imprisoned by self-condemnation. They replay past mistakes and define themselves by failures. Micah 7:8 says, Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.
You cannot move forward looking backward. The future demands forward movement.

C. Releasing Bitterness Toward God
Sometimes people question God during hardship. Job wrestled emotionally. However, Scripture consistently affirms God’s faithfulness. Jeremiah 29:11; Psalm 89:33–34.

Beloved, embrace the love of God today and walk away from the trap of bitterness and unforgiveness.

Remember This: Offences are inevitable, but bitterness is optional.

ASSIGNMENT(S):
1. Quietly reflect and ask yourself: Is there anyone or any situation I still feel resentment towards? Write it down, pray over it, and consciously surrender it to God.
2. Prayerfully take deliberate steps towards forgiveness and emotional freedom.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for speaking to me today. Search me and reveal any hidden root of bitterness. I receive grace to release every hurt, every resentment, and every disappointment. Heal my heart and restore my peace, Lord in Jesus Name.

AMAZING FACT: Lions are highly adaptable and can live in grasslands, scrublands, and semi-desert regions.

PROPHECTIC DECLARATION/WORD: Every root of bitterness be cursed in your life today in Jesus’ Name. The grace to forgive is released for you in Jesus’ Name.
