SCRIPTURE READING
Job 21:27-34
27 “Behold, I know your thoughts
and your schemes to wrong me.
28 For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince?
Where is the tent in which the wicked lived?’
29 Have you not asked those who travel the roads,
and do you not accept their testimony
30 that the evil man is spared in the day of calamity,
that he is rescued in the day of wrath?
31 Who declares his way to his face,
and who repays him for what he has done?
32 When he is carried to the grave,
watch is kept over his tomb.
33 The clods of the valley are sweet to him;
all mankind follows after him,
and those who go before him are innumerable.
34 How then will you comfort me with empty nothings?
There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood.”
QUESTIONS FOR MEDITATION
► Is there any good example for me to follow or command for me to obey?
► Is there any bad example for me to avoid or warning for me to heed?
Scripture Union Daily Power – 8 August 2025 Outline
When something bad happens to godly people, some assume that they must have sinned against God. Job’s friends had similar assumptions of him (Job 21:27-28). Rather than showing practical love and compassion, they were unrelenting in attributing Job’s calamity to a hidden sin. This is despite Job consistently declared to them his innocence. Job cited common occurrences in life to buttress the fact that human prosperity or affliction is not just a matter of absence of sin.
Read Job 21:29-33 again. How should we think in regards to the seemingly seamless prosperity of the wicked? We must not forget that the wicked must be punished Job 21:30. We must also comfort the grieving without any trace of pretence Job 21:34.
Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to offer sincere words of comfort to all those going through difficult moments.
