MEMORY VERSE
2 Corinthians 5:10 (NIV) – For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
SCRIPTURE READING
Job 20:20-29(NIV)
20“Surely he will have no respite from his craving;
he cannot save himself by his treasure.
21 Nothing is left for him to devour;
his prosperity will not endure.
22 In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him;
the full force of misery will come upon him.
23 When he has filled his belly,
God will vent his burning anger against him
and rain down his blows on him.
24 Though he flees from an iron weapon,
a bronze-tipped arrow pierces him.
25 He pulls it out of his back,
the gleaming point out of his liver.
Terrors will come over him;
26 total darkness lies in wait for his treasures.
A fire unfanned will consume him
and devour what is left in his tent.
27 The heavens will expose his guilt;
the earth will rise up against him.
28 A flood will carry off his house,
rushing waters[a] on the day of God’s wrath.
29 Such is the fate God allots the wicked,
the heritage appointed for them by God.”
QUESTION FOR MEDITATION
► Is there any bad example for me to avoid or warning for me to heed?
Zophar in concluding his speech stated that because of the greed of the wicked God would punish them with poverty and misery even in the midst of plenty (Job 20:20-23). The sword of God’s anger would pierce them. God would also allow the fire of His wrath to consume them (Job 20:24-26). Truly there is punishment for the wicked (see 2 Corinthians 5:10).
Some wicked people are very successful during their lives on earth. Why do they not experience poverty and misery? God is patient with them giving room for repentance. Also ill-gotten wealth is not true riches and only multiply sorrows to all that have it. At the end, God will punish all wicked persons if they fail to repent. Repent! Hell is real.
