The Jews had high regard for Abraham (their Patriarch) and to Aaron (Chief of the priests). Today we see how Christ is superior to both of them by taking a closer look at Melchizedek. Melchizedek is first mentioned in Genesis 14:18-20. Read Hebrews 7:1-4 and write down in your notebook what is said about him. How is he greater than Abraham? Abraham received blessings from and paid tithe to him as a priest.
In Hebrews 7:5-10, Melchizedek’s priesthood is shown as greater than that of the Levites because the Levites through Abraham paid tithe to him. Jesus’ priesthood is in the order of Melchizedek which is superior to that of Aaron. Jesus was not from the tribe of Levi where priests were to be chosen, but of the tribe of Judah. He replaced the old Levitical priesthood with a new and better one: eternal, perfect and spotless. Have you been enrolled into His priesthood (1 Peter 2:9)?
