Opening Prayer
As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.
Scripture Reading
Acts 16:16-24(NIV)
16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.”
18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
19 When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”
22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
Meditation Question
► Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
► Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
Scripture Union Daily Guide July 10, 2025 – OUTLINE
It is worth noting that what this demon-possessed slave girl said about Paul and Silas in Acts 16:17 was a fact that could have made them feel popular and proud. Compare Paul’s compassionate response and the slave owners’ greed-driven reaction (Acts 16:18-21). Do you know of similar situations in our day? How was it handled? We must watch against praise singers and the deceit of the devil! There are people who always benefit from the activities of the devil and when such supply is stopped, they become violent and go to any length to destroy.
The crowd joined in the attack of Paul and Silas, and the magistrates maltreated them without trial (Acts 16:22-24)! How does this compare with the justice system in our society today, which is often characterized by unlawful detention and imprisonment? Christian lawyers, magistrates and judges must make the difference in advocating for the vulnerable. Christian warders and all in civil authorities also must seek to do their work with fairness in the fear of God. As Christians, we should be ready to suffer for the sake of the gospel. It is part of our calling (1 Peter 2:21).
What Next?
Take a decision today to be ready to suffer for the gospel if need be.
