Scripture Union Daily Guide 17 September 2023 Outline:
One evidence of true worship is orderliness. The issue of exercising Spiritual gifts in worship has been an age long challenge in the New Testament church. The Corinthian church, so blessed with members with various spiritual gifts, was also affected by this.
In writing to address this problem, Paul stresses in today’s passage that corporate worship should be contributory (v.26). It is meant for encouragement and edification. He also addresses why the gifts of prophesy and speaking in tongues have been given by the Holy Spirit. While the former is to edify the church, the latter is for personal edification. Therefore, he stresses how and when speaking in tongue should be exercised in corporate worship (see v.28). As regards prophesy, notice the counsel he gives (vs.29-31) and why (vs.32,33)?
Paul, in v.34, is not banning all speaking by women in church. They could pray and prophesy (1 Corinthians 11:15). The instruction is given possibly to address disturbance by some women asking their husbands questions or chatting among themselves during worship (v.35).
Note his conclusion in v.39. Whereas speaking in tongues was the cause of disorderly worship, Paul does not forbid its use. The remedy for misuse is not disuse but proper use.
