Scripture Union Daily Guide 17th September 2023 Outline:
Identify with the concern of Paul for the church in v.12. He discusses the impact of the misuse of tongues in public worship on unbelievers (vs.23,24). He does not rule out the use of tongues in group worship. What directive does he give for the appropriate use of tongues (v.13)? He explains why this directive is important (vs.14,16 & 17). Paul again stresses the use of understandable language, for the sake of unbelievers present, so that they may hear God’s word and be converted.
People often have some difficulties understanding v.22. It must be read together with vs.23-25. Here, Paul tells the Corinthians that misuse of tongues in public worship functions in a negative way as a “sign,” and drives the unbeliever away rather than lead him to faith. Always seek the edification of all. If speaking in tongue in the public is considered as spirituality, such thinking is infant thinking, not mature thinking (v.20). Is Paul’s example in v.19 something you should personally follow? Why?
PRACTICE/WORD APPLICATION
And So: Whether your church accepts and encourages the gifts of tongues and prophecy or not, what principles for church life do you find here that need to be exercised fully in your church? Pray that your local church will work on implementing these principles.
