Bible Reading
Acts 20:17-38
17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. 18 And when they came to him, he said to them:
“You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; 20 how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.[a] 22 And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by[b] the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me.
24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God,[c] which he obtained with his own blood.[d] 29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.
31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. 37 And there was much weeping on the part of all; they embraced Paul and kissed him, 38 being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship.
Meditation Question

Scripture Union Daily Guide for 20th July 2025 – OUTLINE
Although Paul left Ephesus for Macedonia under threat to his life after the great exploits of the Lord turning the people’s hearts from man-made gods to Himself, his heart didn’t leave this young church. On his return trip to Jerusalem, after preaching and encouraging the assemblies in Macedonia, he stopped over at Miletus (36 miles from Ephesus) where he gave his final charge to the Ephesian church elders (Acts 20:17).
What were Paul’s approach and content of ministry (Acts 20:18-21,33-35)? The gospel ministry takes roots in our daily conduct among the people, humble service rendered to them as unto the Lord, public preaching and teaching of the gospel truth, home visits to encourage and strengthen the faith of the saints, and hard work to meet our own needs rather than being a burden to others. We must focus on our calling against all uncertainty, testifying to the good news of God’s grace (Acts 20:24).
Elders, pastors, and church leaders at all levels have the responsibility of safeguarding themselves and God’s church against the obvious and subtle false doctrine and practices in our day (Acts 20:26-31).
And So
Let’s be people-focused: living among the people, preaching, and teaching God’s people only what is helpful to them.

Watch and Pray
1. Watch and pray that when the Master cometh,
If at morning, noon or night,
He may find a lamp in every window,
Trimmed and burning clear and bright.
Refrain
Watch and pray, the Lord commandeth;
Watch and pray, ’twill not be long:
Soon He’ll gather home His loved ones,
To the happy vale of song.
2. Watch and pray; the tempter may be near us;
Keep the heart with jealous care,
Lest the door, a moment left unguarded,
Evil thoughts may enter there.
3. Watch and pray, nor let us ever weary;
Jesus watched and prayed alone:
Prayed for us when only stars beheld Him,
While on Olive’s brow they shone.
4. Watch and pray, nor leave our post of duty,
Till we hear the Bridegroom’s voice:
Then, with Him the marriage feast partaking,
We shall evermore rejoice.
Closing Prayer
Help me, Lord, to constantly keep watch over my life and your people that are under my care against internal and external sources of heresy!

PRAYER FOCUS
THE CHURCH OF GOD
“..Grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word … that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus”. Acts 4:29-30
THANK GOD FOR:
* His Spirit and power at work in the Church.
PRAY FOR:
* Fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit on the leaders and members, burden and boldness to preach the gospel with signs and wonders. • The Church will be more committed and strategic in evangelizing the unsaved and building up the body of Christ. • Love, purity and unity of purpose, care for one another and bearing one another’s burdens.
