Topic: Turn Away from Idols
Opening Prayer: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.
Scripture: Deuteronomy 29: 16 – 29
Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit? • Is there any warning for me to heed?
To turn away from the Lord and worship idols or other gods is a very grievous sin that can attract heavy punishment from God. Such action brings a curse on the land and attracts God’s strict judgment (see vs.23, 28). Unlike the idols of wood and stones of Egypt, the gods of money, power, sex, fame, etc abound in our nations today. Dare we as God’s children join the unbelievers in their idolatry practices?
To rush after these idols from Monday to Saturday and then appear in church on Sunday as ‘holy’ people is similar to the attitude condemned in v.19 with dire consequence (v.20). From v.29, we see that although God has kept much of His counsel from us, there is more than enough that He has revealed to us in His word. We have a duty to make use of every legitimate avenue of gaining knowledge e.g., scientific enquiry, but there are certain boundaries which we are not supposed to cross.
1 Samuel 28 records an example. We may ignore such boundaries only to our eternal cost.
