The Bible makes it clear that it is important for us to fast (Mark 2:18-20). The question Jesus answers here, therefore, is not whether fasting is necessary but how to fast the right way. Biblically, fasting means intentionally going without food in order to spend time in prayer. True fasting reveals a heart of humility with the desire to interact more with God in devotion. Again, Jesus goes to the root of the matter in order to teach us the right way of fasting. What is your motive of fasting (v.16)? What does Jesus teach us to do in the period of fasting (v.17)? God sees the heart of all men and therefore anything we do, with the right motive and attitude, will surely attract His reward (v.18). Giving is an act of worship to God. Christians are encouraged to give their monies, time and other resources both to support God’s work and the poor and the needy around us (Matthew 25:34-40; Philippians 4:17). Giving from a genuine heart always attracts both earthly blessings and heavenly rewards. Do you give to please men and to win their admiration or to please God? Note v.21 and compare it with 2 Corinthians 8:5. Remember that your giving only becomes relevant to God after you have first given your life to Him.

• Lord Jesus, give me a heart that understands your Word and a desire to obey it in all my life. • Thank God for the huge impact of the Bible on human souls and the power in it to transform lives.
Prayer for the week
Pray for revival in our land and increased knowledge of God. Pray also for the mercy of God and spirit of repentance. Pray against all attacks directed towards the nation Nigeria. Pray for COCIN Church.
