Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th February 2023 MESSAGE
Pharaoh’s decision to do God’s will was very weak. His self-will was so weak that it swung with situations and circumstances. He would determine to obey God’s will when things were convenient and comfortable for him and the economy. As soon as he got what he wanted, he turned to his old ways again, refusing to let God’s people go. How common is this behaviour among people of our days? “Be not deceived” Paul warned his audience, “God is not mocked. A man reaps whatever he sows” (Galatians 6:7).
A question may come to mind as we continue with the story of Pharaoh: Is God really fair to Pharaoh to harden his heart and then punish him for refusing to let the people go? All humans are free-moral-agents. God does not force us to do His will as we would drive our cars or horses. He gives us the freedom of choice to serve Him or refuse to do that. Pharaoh hardened his own heart by choice. He already had enough of national wealth the Israelites produced for his country. He stood to lose nothing if he let go of the cheap labour for economic reason. His labour and employment policies were also very inhuman and cruel. Oppression should be discouraged at every level whether in the Church or government.
