Scripture Union Daily Guide – 9 December 2025 | OUTLINE
Since David was on their side, the Philistines could now attack Israel with renewed confidence. Notice the actions of King Saul, a desperate man. No doubt, he had many reasons to worry. David was no longer with him, and Prophet Samuel had died. He cried to God but there was no answer. Why was that (1 Samuel 28:18; compare Isaiah 59:1-3).
In despair, Saul disguised himself and turned to a witch at night for consultation, even though he had rightly banned witches and wizards from Israel. Instead of receiving comfort from the witch, notice the damning message he received (1 Samuel 28:19), a confirmation of what he feared most – God’s judgment. Note also that his fasting (1 Samuel 28:20b) did not change anything. Failure to listen to God’s voice and obey it will bring us disaster sooner or later.
How is it possible to communicate with the spirit of the dead? We do not know and need not explore that territory (Deuteronomy 18:9-14). But in the New Testament, the transfiguration of Jesus Christ involved the re-appearance of Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus, and the event was witnessed by Peter, James and John (Matthew 17:1-8). The spirit world is complex.
And So
Avoid every form of syncretism (mixing Christianity with idolatrous or ancestral worship). It is an abomination. God’s harsh judgment awaits such practice.
