Scripture Union Daily Guide 8th March 2024 TOPIC: Jesus, The Way, Truth And Life

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

READ: JOHN 14:1-14

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Q3: Is there any command for me to obey?
• Q4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?

SU DAILY GUIDE FOR 8TH MARCH 2024

In the last two days, we saw Jesus announce His betrayal (13:21), His imminent departure (13:33), and Peter’s denial (13:38). The disciples were obviously upset. They were disturbed and troubled in mind. Knowing this, Jesus comforts them, urging them not to be troubled. Such a situation was an occasion to exercise faith in the Father and the Son. Jesus knows our troubles and is ever near to comfort us (Psalm 46:1). When in a confused state, seek the only source of security (v.1). If we lose all else, we must ensure not to lose the source of our hope (vs.2-3).

A late professor of religion and church minister wrote a book titled, Road Junction. He argued that like a road junction, all religions will ultimately lead to God. See Jesus’ clear response to such position in v.6. Note the article, ‘the’, not ‘a’. This is one reason why we should diligently help people know and accept Jesus as their Lord.

How will you explain the special relationship between Jesus and God, the Father, to an unbeliever (v.10; cf. Colossians 1:15, John 1:18). Notice Jesus’ promise in v.13, repeated for emphasis in v.14.

Practice/Word Application
What next? Jesus has clearly shown that heaven is a reality. There is life beyond the grave. If you believe this, how are you getting ready for it?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Pray for a life-transforming encounter with Jesus and the grace to grow in your knowledge of Him.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 65:24
