TOPIC: Faithful instruments for strengthening the Churches
Opening Prayer
Oh Lord, grant me spiritual insight into the truth of your word as I study it.
Bible Text
Acts 15:30-41
30 So when they were sent away, they went down to Antioch; and after gathering the [a]congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31 When they had read it, they rejoiced because of its [b]encouragement. 32 Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, [c]encouraged and strengthened the brothers and sisters with a lengthy message.
33 After they had spent time there, they were sent away from the brothers and sisters in peace to those who had sent them out.[d] 35 But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
36 After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s return and visit the brothers and sisters in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, called Mark, along with them also. 38 But Paul was of the opinion that they should not take along with them this man who had deserted them [e]in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.
39 Now it turned into such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus. 40 But Paul chose Silas, and left after being entrusted by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41 And he was traveling through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
Meditation Question
► Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
► Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 8th July 2025 – OUTLINE
Judas and Silas were knowledgeable and trustworthy; they obeyed promptly to serve the church (Acts 15:30). Read Acts 15:31-32 and highlight the outcome of their visit. Notice in Acts 15:33 that in the family of God, the sharing of blessing is not one-sided. The leadership role of setting forth Biblical Gospel truth must be taken seriously by church elders in order to promptly address any emerging errors/heresies (Acts 15:35).
Imagine how these pillars of the church and bosom friends, Paul and Barnabas, could allow disagreement of opinion to separate them and hinder the great work of follow-up they intended to do as a team (Acts 15:39-40). Disagreement can come between two believers but what matters is how it is handled. Note that Paul did not harbour bitterness or hatred towards John Mark; for he later asked Timothy to bring him as a needed helper (2 Timothy 4:11). Barnabas continued to train Mark whom Paul needed at the most critical moment of his life. Paul and Silas, supported by the brothers, went on strengthening the churches.
And So
Never give up on anyone!
