Opening Prayer: Sanctify my life dear Lord as I study your word in Jesus name.

Scripture:  Jeremiah 52:17–34

Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Message: 2 Chronicles 3–7 gives a vivid account of the building, furnishing and dedication of the Temple. Contrast the joy in the hearts of Solomon and his people during the seven days of celebration (2 Chronicles 7:8) with what might have gone on in the hearts of Nebuzaradan and his men when they were vandalizing the great edifice. Their disdain for beauty is obvious. Their irreverence for God is clearly manifested and their greed for wealth is shown by the magnitude of looting that took place. What took seven years to build (1 Kings 6:38) was destroyed within a short time.

Furthermore, officers of the Temple and some other prominent people in town were captured and subsequently executed. It is not surprising, therefore, that the anger of the Lord was so fierce against Babylon as we have just seen in the prophecy of Jeremiah in chapters 50–51. The passage, however, reminds us of the danger of generalization and writing off people en bloc. One Babylonian dynasty had treated Israel wickedly, but another was used to preserve the royal line. We must shun violence and vandalism. Furthermore, we must avoid prejudice in our dealing of people.
