TOPIC: The Pre-eminence of Christ
OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, make me more like you through the power of your word as I meditate on it.
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: Colossians 1:15 – 29
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
MESSAGE: In seeking to address the wrong teaching that was penetrating the church, Paul lays emphasis on the supremacy of Christ. The significance of the unity which exists in the Godhead is addressed here (compare v.16 with John 1:1-5).
All things were created by Him and for Him so that all things find their meaning and take their roots in Him (false teachers say that God did not create the world because He would have created evil, this is false – vs.16-17). In Him also all God’s fullness dwells. He is God’s unique Son and not one of the many intermediaries between God and humankind (v.19).
Furthermore, the church finds its being and expression in Him. See how Paul affirms this in v.18. The Lord’s gift of Himself paid for sin and made peace with God. As the author of salvation, Jesus bought the church with His blood through His death and resurrection. If we believe these, how should this understanding influence our relationship with Him (vs.21-23)?
Paul summarises this by affirming his call and commitment to the gospel. Our understanding of the Lord’s supremacy does not only influence our relationship with Him but also with one another. Notice how Paul practises this (vs.24-29)? How should this knowledge influence our commitment to the course of the gospel?
