Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th January 2025 – OUTLINE
There are God’s Kingdom standards and moral demands on controlling lust, honouring marriage, and keeping your word. Jesus properly defines adultery (see Matthew 5:27-28). Christians must avoid not only the physical sexual act of adultery but also the use of the eyes and hands in ways that lead to lust (see Job 31:1).
Note how severe the demand is – “tear it out” and “cut it off.” What is Jesus’ point in using such exaggerated language (Matthew 5:29-30)? What your eye focuses on matters. “Don’t take a second look”, is a good line to follow. These strong and graphic images show the seriousness of sin and the call for radical separation from it. See 1 Corinthians 6:18-20.
Certainly, lust originates from the heart (see Matthew 15:18). Here, Jesus is calling for the true righteousness in sexual behaviour that He alone can give us. Jesus’ striking words about divorce, remarriage, and adultery (Matthew 5:31-32) is to show God’s vehement condemnation of these practices (see Malachi 2:16). If people grant divorce where God does not, then the couple are still married in the sight of God. To remarry a divorced person, is to enter into an adulterous relationship (see also Mark 10:3-12).
Jesus summarizes Old Testament teaching on oaths, and remarks on the practice of swearing oath (Matthew 5:33-37). A true Christian must be altogether truthful. Jesus raises their “yes” or “no” to the level of “binding oath”.
