Topic: No escape!

Opening Prayer: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.

Scripture: Jeremiah 51:52–64

Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th December 2020:

This is the closing section of Jeremiah’s message. The message was not just spoken or read, but demonstrated (v.64). The clear message was that there would be no escape for Babylon despite any strategy that the Babylonians could come up with (v.53). The Lord was determined to silence them completely (v.55) as a retribution for what Babylon had done against Judah (v.56). Note that which the Lord would do to the soldiers, officials and advisers; the people on whom the nation depends for her protection and defence (vv.57–58).

The Lord’s judgment on Babylon is significant in that in addition to the deliverance of Judah, it stands as a symbol of the end of all who oppose God’s rule in the world. In New Testament time, “Babylon” was symbolic of all that hate God and his people. It is against such wickedness and oppression that Christian believers are exhorted to stand firm with the assurance that God will, in his own time, overthrow all such opposition.

Practice/Word Application
• So: Let this be a source of encouragement to you today as a believer despite any circumstances you may be going through.

Character
The kingdom lifestyle is inseparably associated with character in its members. True beauty begins inside and develops from the heart to conduct. Our actions form our character. Our changed and endearing behaviour is an eloquent testimony of what Christ has done in us as we manifest love not only in words but also in deeds. The typical character of a Christian is that of a little child, in which sincerity, innocence, trustfulness and openness to influences from the Holy Spirit is seen.

Prayer Points
• Thank you, Lord – that you are in control and you will make me victorious.
• Thank God for the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His resurrection for the remission of the sins of mankind: the only assurance of eternity with God.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Colossians 1:13
