Read Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th August 2023, Sunday SU Daily Guide Reading

      TOPIC: The Compromised King Joash

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, make me more like you through the power of your word as I meditate on it.

      Scripture: 2 Kings 11:21-12:21

      Question(s) for Reflection
      • Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
      • Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th August 2023 Message

King Joash did what was right in God’s eyes during the life of Jehoiada (v.2). He was accustomed to a relationship with God since his early childhood through the priest. Many children who have Christian parents often depend on their parents’ faith. In the absence of their mentors, they fall when troubles come their way, because they lack dependence on, and personal faith in God (cf. 2 Chronicles 24:17-18). May we always help others to depend directly on the Lord.

The Good: Financial accountability is very clear in vs.9-11. Notice how various people were involved – the priests (v.9), the royal secretary and the high priest (v.10), the work supervisors (vs.11-12). Accountability included the fact that this designated fund was not diverted to other uses (vs.13-14). There were other provisions made, for example, for the priests (v.16). How does the attitude of Joash and diligence of the workers serve as an example in how we do our work?

The bad: The high places, where foreign deities were also worshipped, were not destroyed (v.3). What does this indicate? It is also unfortunate that Joash takes what was a prior blessing and gives it to his enemy to buy his safety instead of trusting in God (v.18).

      Practice/Word Application
What next? Looking at how king Joash started, we would expect a reign full of hope. Why did he fail to finish well? How can you ensure that you finish well? Ask God for grace to end well.

      For Further Study
Further study: Read 2 Chronicles 24:17-27 to learn more about Joash’s decline. What lessons can you learn from him?
