Bible Text
Jeremiah 49:23-39
Meditation Question
►Q1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
This passage foretold God’s judgement on four nations. Jeremiah 49:23-27 describe the judgement upon Syria (Damascus, represents the whole nation). God would punish Syria probably because it had allied with others to attack Jerusalem (Isaiah 7:1-5; cf. Amos 1:3-5).
Read Jeremiah 49:25 again from different versions. How is Damascus described? Though once famous, and a delight to God, Damascus would be terrified (Jeremiah 49:23-24) because of forthcoming destruction (Jeremiah 49:26-27). Even those in whom God delights cannot escape His punishment when necessary. Both Kedar and the Kingdoms of Hazor (Jeremiah 49:28-33) were nomadic people who lived in the Arabian desert. They lived very simple lives (Jeremiah 49:29,31) but often raided Israelite territory (Judges 7:12; Judges 8:10). They would also be punished (Jeremiah 49:30,32-33).
Read Jeremiah 49:34-39 again. What can we learn from God’s judgement on Elam? When God decides to judge a people, their greatest strength will be the first to fail. The promise of restoration (Jeremiah 49:39) was fulfilled, in that Susa the capital of Elam became the centre of the Persian Empire (Daniel 8:2; Nehemiah 1:1), and Elamites were present on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:9,11).
And So
Every word of God will come to pass. Trust Him!
