Topic: Do Whatever He Tells You
Opening Prayer: Open my eyes O Lord that I might behold wondrous things from your word in Jesus name.
Today’s Scripture: JOHN 2:1-12
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
MESSAGE: To us, the way Jesus addressed His mother in v.4 might seem impolite, but His mother understood Him better than we do! She knew He was going to do something about the situation, as her next words indicate quite clearly (v.5). Jesus demonstrated His respect by granting her request even though it was not yet the hour of His public ministry (v.4).
Wedding feasts in Israel at that time could last days. Streams of visitors had to be entertained. Shortage of food or drink would no doubt be a serious embarrassment. Note the three actions that preceded Jesus’ miracle (vs.2,3, 5-8). Jesus will not gate-crash into our situation (v.2). Rather, we are expected to ask for His intervention (Matthew 7:7). We should also not expect Him to work according to our programme.
We must learn to wait for His time and obey His instructions, however unreasonable they may seem to us (vs.7&8). It is the only way to experience His miracles in our lives and the key to unlocking the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us (Acts 5:32).
John describes Jesus’ miracle here as the “first of the signs” (NIV). What deeper significance does the turning of the water to wine convey? See John 7:37-39. This miracle is a sign that the gospel can bring hope to a hopeless and embarrassing situation.
Practice/Word Application
So what? In every decision, small or big, be sure to listen to what the Lord is telling you to do. Then “do whatever He tells you”!
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, as you saved the situation at Cana, please intervene in mine also.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with 2 Samuel 7:29
