Scripture Union Daily Guide 4th September 2024 MESSAGE
So, the Israelites have fully conquered the land of Canaan. They are settled, they have vanquished their enemies, God has fulfilled all His promises to them (21:43-45). What next?
* The commendation (vs.1-4): For what does Joshua commend the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh? Honouring one’s commitments to God’s mission and service is worth every commendation. Beware of the temptation to quit early and leave God’s work undone.
* The charge (v.5): God’s central message to the Israelites and to us today is: ‘Keep the commandments of the Lord. Hold fast to Him and serve Him with all your heart and all your soul.”
* The blessing (vs.6-8): Notice the breadth of wealth with which the two and a half tribes returned home. Although they sacrificed their comfort and rest by joining their brothers to conquer the land, God greatly rewarded them with wealth. Hebrews 6:10 offers a truth worth reflecting on.
* Anxiety arises (vs.11-20): The decision of the two and a half tribes to build an altar raised anxiety and triggered an agitation for civil war from the rest of the Israelites. What community examples did the Israelites cite as the basis for their anxiety (vs.17,20)?
Practice/Word Application
For further reflection: Looking at your life as a Christian, assess how well you have complied with v.5.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
