TOPIC: Jehu, the Half-Hearted Reformer
OPENING PRAYER: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.
SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 10:18-36
QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Observe the strategy Jehu uses to destroy all Baal’s worshippers (vs.18-19). Compare his attitude with that of Elijah in 1 Kings 18 in his confrontation of Baal’s servants. Each time, Jehu trusted his own intelligence and human abilities to carry out his mission. He was the unique king who aggressively sought to destroy Baal’s worship from Israel (v.28).
Note how God commends Jehu for obeying his instructions regarding the destruction of Ahab’s house and the promise He gave him (v.31). Unfortunately, his total obedience stops there. He promoted the false worship of the true God by allowing the golden calves to stand (v.29). How many of us are so adamant about the sins of other people while being tolerant towards our own sins? Jehu sadly continues in the steps of idolatrous king Jeroboam. What does it reveal about his relationship and heart with God?
What next? We are never told that Jehu put his trust in the all-powerful God and had fellowship with Him. He had the necessary influence to turn the hearts of the Israelites back to God, but his own half-heartedness prevented that to happen. What lesson can you learn from his attitude?
