Scripture Union Daily Guide 3rd October 2024 – MESSAGE
The person who learns from his own mistakes is not a wise man. The wise man is the one who learns from the mistakes of others! History helps us to learn valuable lessons from what those who have gone before us did – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Unfortunately, history is often distorted to fit in with the perspective of the storytellers. One of the great things about the Bible is that facts that are not favourable to Israel are accurately recorded by the Scribes of Israel. Thus, successive generations can learn from what led to their triumphs as well as their blunders (vs.5-8).
Now, take a look at the behaviour of the Ephraimites (vs.9-10). They had good knowledge of the law of God, and they had learned of how God fought for His people against strong enemies and how He provided for them in impossible situations (vs.12-16).
Despite that, they earned the curse pronounced by the prophet in Jeremiah 48:10.Why? We too must learn our lessons from history. We are soldiers in the Army of the Lord in the conflict against the forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). We must never turn back!
Practice/Word Application
