Scripture Union Daily Guide 30th August 2023 Outline:
The occasion of this Psalm was when Doeg betrayed David. He was an Edomite and the chief herdsman of King Saul. In the record of 1 Samuel 21:7 and Chapter 22, he is shown to be a traitor and evil man whose loose tongue and wicked report caused Saul to order the execution of Ahimelech, the High Priest, and all the priests at Nob.
Read vs.1-4 again and notice what evil people find pride in doing. To the one who prides himself in the schemes and projects which are intended to injure others; or one who congratulates himself for successfully carrying out evil designs against innocent people, there is a sure reward (vs.5-7).
A direct opposite is reflected in the passage for the righteous. In the New Testament, the righteous is one who has come into a definite relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our righteousness (1 Corinthians 1:30). It is this righteousness that empowers us to live in the way God expects so we are not counted among the class of evil men. We should therefore seek righteousness and pursue it so we may flourish like olive tree in the house of God, safe and contented notwithstanding the Doegs of this world who are seeking to destroy us.
