Scripture Union Daily Guide 30 April 2026 | OUTLINE
God warned the Jews not to go to Egypt (Jeremiah 42:9-16) but they went in defiance of God’s instruction (Jeremiah 43:1-7). They thought they would escape from God’s judgement in Egypt. However, while in Egypt, God, through Jeremiah, announced to them that Pharaoh and all Egypt, all the gods of Egypt and all those who rely on Pharaoh would be handed over to Nebuchadnezzar (Jeremiah 46:13-14; cf. Ezekiel 29:17-20).
God’s judgement on Egypt will be total, from the North (Jeremiah 46:19) to the South (Jeremiah 46:25). In what ways do we behave as the Jews today? We need to be careful of whom we trust, especially in difficult times. When God rises to judge evil, there will be no hiding place. Even the one you rely upon to help you will become helpless.
Read Jeremiah 46:20-24 again and observe how helpless Egypt would be. They will not be able to withstand the Babylonian army (Jeremiah 46:18,23,24). Why? See Jeremiah 46:15 and Isaiah 19:1-4. Read Jeremiah 46:26b-28 again. What do these verses teach us about God? It is comforting to know that God may discipline us for our sins, but He will not destroy us.
