Scripture Union Daily Guide Today’s Outline:
The Psalmist tells us about days of trouble, of crying aloud to God in anguish and of moaning with outstretched hands in sleepless nights (vs.1-2). How different from his previous experiences of joyful songs of praise during joyful nights when he celebrated God’s grace and compassion (vs.5-9)! That joy was more in keeping with His wondrous works and mighty deeds (vs.14-15) in the ancient records of His compassionate and glorious dealings with His peoples (vs.16-20).
Sin can turn the hand of God against His children. Quite often in their history, the children of Israel provoked the Lord’s anger by forsaking Him and dabbling in idol worship (e.g. Jeremiah 25:6-7).
As Christians, we inherit all the privileges of ancient Israel as God’s chosen people. See how we are described in 1 Peter 2:9. We must be careful not to make their mistake of taking God’s grace and mercy for granted. If we do, we have only ourselves to blame for the consequences!
Practice/Word Application
Thought: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Thank you, Father, for your mercies that I receive each day. May I never take them for granted and so incur your anger.
