Contrary to the Jewish belief, it is not every sickness that is the direct result of sin. See John 9:3. In this case, however, the underlying problem was probably sin. Our Lord showed His power over sin and its effects. Read v.3 again and notice the Scribes’ reaction to Jesus’ statement in v.2? They cared very little about the man’s condition. Although they did not voice it out, Jesus knew their thoughts (vs.4-6). Our thoughts are naked and open before God (v.3; compare Psalm 139:2; Hebrews 4:13).
During Jesus’ time, tax collectors or publicans were hated and despised. They were branded corrupt, being collaborators with the oppressive Roman government. Jesus’ two words, ‘Follow Me’ (v.9), was enough an invitation for Matthew. He left his lucrative career to follow Jesus (v.9) and became an instant evangelist, using an appropriate method to bring his old associates together to hear Christ. What have you done to lead others to Christ since you were saved?
Have you led a friend, a colleague, your contemporary, or even a family member to Christ in line with the Great Commission (Mark 16:15; Ezekiel 33:7-8)? Do not be complacent or lethargic about it? Do not think that it is too early or too late for you. Your part in God’s Kingdom matters.
