Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th September 2022 Devotional Message for Thursday– Listen for His voice

Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th September 2022 Devotional for Thursday

      TOPIC: Listen for His voice

OPENING PRAYER: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

      SCRIPTURE: Psalm 29:1‐11

Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th September 2022 MESSAGE

The psalmist calls for praise to God at the beginning and end of this psalm. He highlights the reason for the magnitude of praise that should be offered to God. He also states the need to pay attention and give glory to the only one who deserves far more than we can ever give Him.

This psalm is regarded as the ‘anti‐Baal’ hymn because it proclaims that Yahweh rules over the storm as opposed to Baal, worshipped by the Canaanites as the storm god usually depicted holding a lightning bolt. Vs.3‐9 emphasise the voice of the Lord. It is repeated seven times, indicating completeness, to portray God’s power and glory. God’s voice penetrates walls and hearts.

It breaks the bonds of the enemy and cannot be contained, challenged, or silenced. Lebanon, known for its mighty cedar trees, is a standard and image for earthly majesty and glory in the Old Testament. Yet, the voice of the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon (v.5).

Despite the awesomeness, majesty and greatness of God and His word, He often comes to us in the stillness and gentleness that endears us to Him. We in turn must listen attentively and submit to His voice.

      Question(s) for Reflection
      • What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
      • Is there any command for me to obey?
      • Is there any prayer for me to remember?

      Practice/Word Application
And so: Spend a little longer time before the Lord today to prayerfully comprehend what He wants to say to you.

      • Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th September 2022 Closing Prayer
      • Father, open my spiritual ears that I may recognise and hear your voice.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Philippians 3:13 ‐ 14
